Tomorrow, Secret Garden, Arkwright

I am currently reading the book Tomorrow, When the War Began, and I am hooked. It's really good and the characters are great and it's fantastic. I got it on my birthday and it's so good.
I am also reading the Secret Garden and that's good too. I like all the details and I am not surprised to see it among many lists of treasured classics.
I just finished reading the book Arkwright about a Giant Anteater living with a sea captain. It's a nice, amusing little book and I enjoy it every time I read it.

On the Spine Notice!!!

It is getting a bit boring (probably for the people reading this blog too) just reading reviews all the time and nothing else. So I am just going to talk about books, no reviews or exerpts just BOOKS.
Thank you,
Zobo!

ANZAC DAY

Hello! As you probably know, today is ANZAC Day. This is a day to honour the men who fought couragously in WWI, and in fact, I have an ANZAC book you might want to read!

Soldier Boy by Anthony Hill. It's a great non fiction novel following the journeys of the believed youngest ever ANZAC, James Martin. It's full of great info and has some pictures too. Probably not the best choice for the kids but great for 13 years and up. This book is very suitable for assignments and projects.

Lest We Forget.

THE BOOK THIEF!!

OMGOSH! The Book Thief is the best book I have ever read!
I don't really want to write a review about it, because I will spoil too much. It is soooo good! I love how it is narrated by Death itself. And AHHHHHH! You should definitely, most certainly read this book.
Let me just say a huge THANK YOU MARKUS ZUSAK! for creating the book.
I don't reccommend ages 8-12 read it. Only very mature 12 year olds should read this book, as there is SOME language, but not very often.
This is an awesome book, so you should definitely read this book, even if it takes you a couple of months.
P.S- The movie is fantastic too. If you haven't read the book but watched the movie, I suggest you read the book too! If you have read the book but haven't seen the movie, be sure to watch it!
The Book Thief Book Cover- the same one I have.

Book Look: Bridge to Terabithia

Bridge to Terabithia is by Katherine Paterson. It is about a young boy, Jesse Aarons, who lives a hard life on a farm. He is a really fast runner and often takes part in running races at school with other boys.
One day, he meets a girl in the same year, Leslie Burke. They have moved into the old Perkins' place basically next door.
As Leslie and Jesse get to know each other, they create a make believe world called Terabithia- the only way you can get across is by swinging across a rope- and the unfortunate fate of one of the characters.
Leslie is a very likable character- she's smart and honest and funny. She really doesn't truly care what other people think of her- apart from the fact girls teased her about not having a televison
Jesse is a bit laid back. He does whatever he is told without a fuss.
The close relationship between Leslie and Jesse is not like a romantic or certain feelings towards each other sort of relationship. It's like a general bond- like between a cat and a dog- not to touchy or close but strong by forever.
I loved the parts when Leslie would speak in her Terabithian Queen voice and Jesse could not match it. It was only towards the end of the book that he got the knack of it.
This book is heart warming and it made be sniff a bit at the end. The characters and setting and everything about it is beautiful. No wonder Paterson has had so many awards for this book. It had the same feel around it like I said in my book review about When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.
That was this weeks Book Look!

Book Review:Hatchet

Hatchet is by Gary Paulsen. It's an amazing if not unbelievable story about a boy, Brian, who has to fight with all he has to survive- courage, stamina and a hatchet, while he is trapped for months in the Canadian wilderness. How did he get there? You'll have to read the first few chapters of this exciting book to find out!

This book enabled me to make connections to other texts (including TV shows and movies) about survival and the things surrounding that.It was very interesting to read how the Brian survived for so long. But lots of things seemed to be based around wood- build a shelter out of wood, make a fire using wood, make weapons using wood and more. Wood, wood, wood. It got really boring at some stages when he was making things all from wood. Although he was trapped near a huge forest and wood was probably the only available resource, I thought Paulsen should have twisted it.
In the end, it is still an extremely great and interesting read. I just hope the sequel (I haven't read it yet) will be a bit more out there than wood. I wouldn't be surprised if you don't sound intrigued by the book after this review, but believe me, the book is more thrilling than it sounds.
Rating: 3/5 stars!

Book Review:When You Reach Me

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is a book about puzzle and mystery, but more so- friendship and the values that friends have. I got this book for my birthday and I carried it everywhere with me- school, going out to dinner, on the bus and at home. I couldn't stop reading it.
It's set around the 1970s. A girl named Miranda is having her world turning up-side down when someone punches her friend, Sal, for no reason and he for no reason (she thinks) shuts her out. Her single mother is going to be on a contestant on a TV show called The $20.000 Pyramid. Objects go missing and she finds notes from a stranger :)*.
This book wasn't thrilling or really action packed. It was a simple story (it seemed!) but then you realise it is more complex then you think. I really enjoyed how each of the characters we meet are not what we expect. They have their own backgrounds and story to tell, that all fits in with the stolen things and the notes.
But most of all, I really loved how Stead created Miranda to love the book A Wrinkle In Time**, a real book that I also got for my birthday!
In all, if I could find some unique way of summing up this book.... PLEASANT. It was a nice, calm, pleasant read.
Rating: 4 & 1/2 out of 5 stars!

** The author of this book is Madeleine L'engle.
