I actually forgot to discuss this book, the second in a series (so far). The first book, The Kensington Reptilarium was my first EVER review on this blog, so I really wanted to review this one. Then forgot.
The Icicle Illuminarium by N.J Gemmell follows the adventures of the Caddy Kids- Kick, Scruff, Bert and Pin- after their father returns from the war. But alas, he is very sick, and he must be sent away to be cared for.
During this episode the butler, Charlie Boo, hints that their mother is still alive. Determined to find out the truth, the Caddy kids escape from the Reptilarium and hunt down Uncle Basti's "friend". They are kidnapped, stowed away in a van and taken to the Icicle Illuminarium where Lady Adora has a special plan for them. During their stay, they find a ghostly but somewhat real boy, whom they call 'Bone Boy', who helps them escape, along with an unlikely friend. And, with all this drama and scariness and action, they are counting on their dingo, Bucket, to save them.
The thing I like about this book and TKR is that it's very original- setting, characters, plot. It's very lively and bouncy to read, like you are happy when reading it, because of the spirit the Caddy kids have. It's cute in some parts as well, and funny, and I love how Kick always sounds so melodramatic, like when she says "
Our darling uncle is wonderfully precious and eccentric and adorable-and vulnerable."

I really like the Caddy Kids. They're funny, cute, mischievous, brave and witty. They each have their traits- Kick is the leader. Bert is obsessed with fashion. Scruff likes to do things his own way. Pin is just a toddler who tends to be smarter than most infants.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I do hope that Gemmell writes a third one. It feels like the Aussie version of "A Series of Unfortunate Events."
Zobo!
P.S
Love the cover!
